Train Managers

I was in a period of never seeing the same train manager twice – they seemed to have such a strange shift pattern on the Paddington to Swansea line.
I now must have been commuting by bike and train long enough to be recognised (the yellow road bike stands out, I guess) as I got smiles, a welcoming greeting and even a thumbs up when I put my bike on the train this morning. Nice!
It probably helped that I noticed from the time board that the train was back to front this morning, with 1st class at the front and therefore bike storage would be at the rear. See? I’ve been doing this for a while now.

  1. Oooh you seasoned traveller you….
At least Late Western tell you when they’re gonna switch their trains around, unlike Virgin who have me racing the platform at Bstl Pway at random intervals. But Late Western don’t have doors that work properly, and they fly open between Newport and Magor, causing emergency brake application and much spilling of coffee. 45 min wait to decide they can’t fix it, everybody decanted at Severn Tunnel Jcn, so that I can miss TWO connections to Brum, causing 1hr 20min delay and a 3hr32min commute this morning. (Thank god for Sony Walkman, No thanks to First Late Western)
    Rant off…..

  2. Oh dear. Yeah, I avoid those modern (?) trains like the plague. Not only do their doors open randomly but they also don’t open when you want to get your bike off and the train’s about to disappear off to London with it.

Uh…this is the same type of train you catch everyday pal (HST)…be afraid, be very afraid. Not only are they over 30 years old now(true), but they have nearly 50,000 components, all built by the lowest bidder…
Just eaten a jam doughnut with luminous pink filling, christ knows what it’ll do to my insides!

  4. I thought you were talking about them trains with buttons instead of handles. I thought those old trains with door handles were sorted these days? Obviously not.
It sounds like I’ll be getting an adrenalin rush just by commuting in future then.
