Icy Swansea

2009-01-05--January Ice
It has been a really cold start to the year in Swansea, but I wish a Happy New Year to you all. I hope you all have a productive and successful 2009. Most of us in the medical school are starting to realise that the September start date for the new course really isn’t very far away, so it’ll be interesting to see how everyone progresses.
Cycling to work on Tuesday I left the house to a -6C morning and running around the bay later that day (it felt great to be running by the sea again) explained why the movement of the sea looked strange: it had started to freeze! As I was running I didn’t have a camera with me but it was an awesome sight and one I may never see again. All the standing sea water on the beach was frozen solid and the surf had left a high tide mark of snow. The sea itself was filled with chunks of ice up to 30 or 40cm in diameter surrounded by water of a slush puppy consistency. Hopefully photos of this will start to appear on the web and I’ll post a link. It was a bright sunny day and completely bizarre.
The black ice that I’ve become used to on the cycle path was thawing on my ride home this afternoon, so I guess the sea will return to its usual state too. We’re due a defrost this weekend as the wind changes direction and temperatures of 7C will feel summery after the cold spell. Despite my frozen fingers I don’t really want the rain back! Maybe it’s time to invest in some quality cycling kit like I promised myself as an impoverished student 15 years ago.
